It's gonna be EXTREME!

Grab your board! The powder's fresh and Babymouse is hitting the slopes! (Uh, snowboarding, Babymouse? Is that really a good idea? You don't exactly have a good history with . . . er, being outside). Will Babymouse make it off the bunny slope? Will this winter be extreme—or just extremely lame? And does locker really have a cousin?  Find out in EXTREME Babymouse! Snowy Mountain will never be the same!

I had to do some research for this book because I didn't know how to snowboard. I grew up skiing. It was fun ... and a little painful! (hint: you fall a LOT when you learn to snowboard).

Here's where I started.

I had to learn how to put on the board.

And I had to learn to overcome total terror.

Because although this isn't exactly a steep hill, it is scary going down the first time!

And the second. And the third.

I still love to ski, though.

Especially with my Babymouse skis.

Hope to see you on the slopes!

EXTREME BABYMOUSE will be available everywhere January 8!

Grab your soccer ball, because Squish is hitting the field in ...

It's soccer season! But the Waterfleas are getting pummelled game after game. Squish knows winning isn't everything, but it's something right? Can Squish turn the losing streak around when he becomes team captain? Will Pod figure out how to harness the power of lightning? And how can amoebas play soccer when they don't have any feet?

We had a lot of fun making this one. Here's one of the early lay-outs:

Back to school!

I love this time of the year. The back-to-school rituals of finding the perfect outfit for the first day and shopping for school supplies. (I was obsessed with Trapper Keepers when I was a kid.)

But mostly I like remembering teachers who changed my life. Like the second grade teacher who read aloud The Boxcar Children. And the high school teacher who became the coach for the debate team (we took second in states thanks to our coach -- I'm still proud of that one.) And, of course, the college professor who encouraged me to write poetry even though I was an International Studies major. These were my teachers.

Even though I'm out of school now, teachers are still inspiring me. Especially a certain fourth-grade teacher in Michigan who has a blog called Sharpread

Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to Mr. Colby Sharp:

And what does he do to get kids fired up about reading? Well, check this out:

So I can't be more excited to be going back into the classroom again this September ... Mr. Sharp's classroom, that is. Because he's one of my teachers.

Now I just need to find the perfect outfit. Hmmm ...

I think this will be perfect.

Sometimes it pays to be a hoarder ...

Ginny has big plans for eighth grade. She's going to try out for cheerleading, join Virtual Vampire Vixens, and maybe even fall in love. But middle school is more of a roller-coaster ride than Ginny could have ever predicted. Filled with Post-its, journal entries, grocery lists, hand-drawn comic strips, report cards, IMs, notes, and more,Eighth Grade Is Making Me Sick is the sometimes poignant, often hilarious, always relatable look at a year in the life of one girl, told entirely through her stuff.

This book was illustrated by the AMAZING Elicia Castaldi:

And here's a behind-the-scenes look at how she did it:

Also, if you're a Babymouse or Squish fan, the comics are done by my bro, Matt Holm.

Can we all just take a minute here and SMILE?

Did you see what the #1 paperback graphic book was on the The New York Times bestseller list last week?

That's right. A graphic novel about a sixth grade girl created by one of the most ridiculously talented ladies in comics was number one on The New York Times.  If that's not enough to make you smile, I don't know what is.

Today is BABYMOUSE FOR PRESIDENT's "bookday!"
This is the 16th Babymouse book! Which, of course, is still mind-boggling. Our little mouse had very humble beginnings as you can see below.

Early Babymouse sketch by Matt Holm

We've learned a lot making Babymouse: That we love Sharpies, restickable gluesticks, and scanners that don't break. That it's never a good idea to put a water bottle in your computer bag. And that we need a copyeditor to make sure Babymouse always has a tail (yes, there is an "Official Tail-Checker".)

But, mostly, we've learned that it takes a team who believes in you. So, many thanks to the whole gang at Random House Childrens' Books (we're looking at you, Shana Corey and Cathy Goldsmith!) We couldn't make Babymouse--or Squish!--without you.

Last but not least, a heartfelt thanks to our readers. You make us get out of bed in the morning ... and sometimes stay up late working all night.

Cupcakes for everyone!

--Jenni & Matt

p.s. Hope to see you at Comic-con!

Friday, July 6, 2012

Lloyd Alexander!

I just learned that there is a Lloyd Alexander Kickstarter project! They are making a documentary about him.

You know who he is, right? He is the amazing author who wrote my favorite book ...

Can you say swoon?

So go HERE and consider donating. I just did. They only have 17 days to go. My old friends Taran, Eilonwy, Doli, Gwydion, Fflewddur Fflam and Dallben will thank you. (And Gurgi. Who can forget Gurgi? Not me.)

Sometimes things do come back from the dead ...

The Creek is back!

My book, The Creek, which had gone out of print years ago (sob!) has been resurrected as an e-book  just in time for summer reading (whee!)

... and it has a fabulous new cover by the incredibly multi-talented Elicia Castaldi!

About The Creek:
Caleb Devlin is a legend on Mockingbird Lane--the boy who terrorized an entire town before he got sent away. They say he hurt other kids, tortured animals, set fires, and did things grown-ups speak of only in whispers. But that was all before Penny and her little brother moved here. Now Caleb's back, older and more dangerous than ever, and terrible things have started happening again. The whole town knows he's responsible, but the police can't do anything without proof. So Penny and her friends have no choice but to try to stop him themselves. Except now he's after them.

"Holm, author of several historical novels about girls grappling with puberty, gives the theme a contemporary twist, adding trappings of a creepy thriller that pushes the story well beyond the wan child-plays-detective stuff so prevalent in youth mysteries."

"Chock-full of creepy moments, genuine tragedy, and sinister secrets. It's a good thing the plot moves quickly, because this one is hard to put down."
Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

"For middle schoolers hungry for horror fiction written on their level."

A Parent's Guide to the Best Kids' Comics!

Just in time for summer reading ...

My brother, Matt, and I get asked a lot to suggest graphic novels for kids. Luckily for comic readers everywhere, Snow Wildsmith and Scott Robins have done all the heavy lifting with their amazing new book:

A lot of our house favorites are in the guide including OwlyBenny & Penny, Courtney Crumrin, Elephant & Peggie, and the beloved Long Tail KittyComics are broken out by grade level with art excerpts so you get a real sense of style. I think this book will go a long way in helping adults choose comics for (and maybe even with!) the kids in their lives.

What book made you fall in love with reading as a kid?

There's a great article at The San Francisco Chronicle discussing what books make kids fall in love with reading:

And, best of all, they mention BABYMOUSE!
